Your checklist for the big move

Moving to a new home has a set of challenges that can overwhelm anyone from the first-time mover to the one who has done it several times before. For an easy and stress-free moving experience, preparation is the key.

To prepare yourself for that big move, here is a checklist that we have prepared for you:

✔ Make an inventory of your belongings

Doing so will distinguish between the items you need to bring with you and those you need to sell, donate or throw away.

Create a simple list or spreadsheet with categories for better management of your belongings. This also acts as a tool to guide you in properly sorting out your things during packing time.

    ✔ Create a packing plan

Using your item inventory, figure out which items you do not use regularly and pack them first. These may include picture frames, books, decorations, and the like. Meanwhile, essentials such as kitchen items, clothes, and toiletries should be packed last.

✔ Keep your receipts and bills organized

It is not uncommon for people to lose track of bills and receipts during home relocation. To make sure you are on top of your finances, keep these documents in a folder or binder.

Put reminders on your phone or set up auto-pay with your bank or billing company for monthly bills. That way, you will not have to worry about missing payment deadlines.

✔ Pick a reliable moving company

Choosing the right moving company is essential to any successful moving experience. Moving companies may also have their own specializations so it is best to find one that matches your requirements.

Always research on a company before hiring them. Take a look at their online reviews and ratings or contact your realtor and ask for recommendations. Get a quote from at least three different companies to compare costs and get the best deal possible.

✔ Know your new home’s measurements and floor plan

Always check your new home’s measurements and floor plan before moving in. Doing this will allow you to properly plan the placement of your furniture and appliances. It will also make it easier to give instructions to the movers come moving day.

✔ Take care of your utilities and cancel subscriptions

Before moving in, make sure that utilities are installed in your new home. There is nothing worse than moving into a home without water, electricity or internet. Get in touch with your current utility providers and inform them about your move.

Also, remember to cancel subscriptions and local gym memberships to avoid recurring charges.

✔ Update your address and notify important agencies

One of the most important things to do when moving to a new home is changing your address. Inform your bank, insurance company, and other important agencies about your move. Also have your address updated to avoid missing important mail.

✔ Pack an overnight bag and first-day box

Packing an overnight bag and a first-day box will save you from the trouble of going through hundreds of boxes looking for basic necessities. Your overnight bag should have the essentials like a change of clothes, medicine, pajamas, toiletries, and the like. First-day boxes should contain things like paper towels, plates, silverware, and sheets.
